SAVE IT FOR A RAINY DAY

In Urban areas like Mumbai, rainwater  harvesting has significant role towards fulfilling the secondary water requirements such as flushing, washing etc. “This water requirement can be achieved first by accumulating rainwater  from the terrace, then collecting it through the pipeline fitted with a filtration system, storing it into the tank and utilizing it during the rainy season, The water,  which is excess, has to be taken to the recharge pit and the bore well wherein, it gets replenished and can be utilized during the non-monsoon period. This is how, throughout the year, the water requirement (for flushing, washing etc.) can be fulfilled. These steps ought to be followed as that ensures the availability of water for all and also the sustainability of groundwater resources in the city are,” says Sandeep Adhyapak, director, Water Field Research Foundation.

However, in case a property does not have this incorporated during the construction stage, the system can be installed later as well, at very low costs. “For a society with 48 flats, the cost for putting in place a rainwater harvesting system is approximately Rs. 3 lakh and this money will be recovered in three years, with the money saved from hiring tankers, as rainwater is free, “says Adhyapak.
